EMDR for animals

Certified EMDR for animals Practitioner in Koh Samui

Does your dog fear the vacuum cleaner, panic when hearing loud noises, or refuse to get in the car?
Do these reactions make his life and yours difficult?

As a Certified EMDR for Animals Practitioner by the Institut EMANASSO, I come to your home to help your dog overcome his fears, fight his phobias and return to a peaceful daily routine.

EMDR for animals aims to reduce emotional and behavioral disturbances.

It is recommended for any fearful, anxious or stressed dog presenting:

  • avoidance behaviors,
  • fears, traumas and phobias,
  • agressive reactions.

Why is my dog afraid?

Your dog has been through a stressful situation and has retained a memory of this painful experience. This memory leads to disturbed behaviors. Each time he encounters the triggering stimulus (vacuum cleaner, car, firecrackers, etc.), he relives the original emotional shock. Your dog then tries to protect itself by fleeing, curling up, or displaying defensive behaviors.

These fear situations are specific to each animal and vary in intensity, depending on the emotion felt the first time.

When your dog is afraid, do not hesitate to offer your support by kneeling down and reassuring him with a soft and calm voice.

Contrary to popular belief, fear, being an emotion, cannot be reinforced.

What does EMDR mean?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

These movements are a natural process of calming and emotional regulation, which work to relieve fears, phobias, and stress.

EMDR was discovered in 1987 by Francine Shapiro, an American psychologist.
Originally for humans, it has proven to be effective for all mammals.

The origins of EMDR for animals

EMDR for animals was conceptualized in 2010 by Fabienne Lannes-Gillibert,
a psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner with over 20 years of experience, practicing in the South of France.

It is used to help dogs, cats, and even horses that suffer from post-traumatic
stress syndrome or emotional disorders.

In EMDR for animals, eye movements are replaced by touches called ABS or Alternating Bilateral Stimulations.

A scientifically recognized method

EMDR for animals was scientifically validated in 2013 by researchers from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research INSERM.

It was recognized by the World Health Organization WHO in 2012 and by the French National Health Authority HAS.
